I miss how fast food used to be

Growing up, I always loved fast food. McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and Taco Bell, especially. McDonald's was colorful, inexpensive, and tasted consistent every time you went. Now, it's expensive, "get out grey", and wildly inconsistent to the point I wonder if it's just me or has the food changed? Burger King had massive portion sizes, tasty onion rings you'd daydream about, and rich flame-broiled taste. Now the whopper is the size of a cheese burger, the onion rings are always burnt, and the burgers taste microwaved, not flame-broiled. Wendy's had the sunroom for a relaxed meal, cheap Frostys, chili that was delicious, and staff that was extremely friendly. Now it's a cold box with a rushed experience, expensive ass frosty's, watery chili, and the rudest staff ever. Taco Bell was least expensive place to eat with $.69 tacos, the coin drop game, that teal/magenta lobby, and crazy speed. Now a hard shell taco is almost $3, no coin drop game, cold grey box, and takes FOREVER!

What is this pervasive, subtle flavor in almost all food I’ve tried in Australia?

I’m Canadian, and I’ve also lived in Japan, England, the US, and Oman. I’m currently in Australia for work, and this is tough to describe but I’ll give it a try. There is a very distinct but subtle flavor or smell I keep tasting in a huge range of foods here, and it’s unlike anything I remember noticing in the other places I’ve lived. It’s not strong or unpleasant, just really pervasive. I’ve picked it up in bread, hummus, cheese, iced coffee, tuna salad, tacos, pizza, corn chips, and a variety of other foods, both whole and processed/prepared. In restaurants and in home cooking. I don’t seem to notice it much in fresh vegetable dishes. The closest descriptors I can come up with are something like dry grass, earthy, or even slightly barnyard-like, though that makes it sound worse than I mean. It isn’t bad at all. It just feels like a background flavor that shows up again and again across very different foods. Am I imagining this, or does anyone know what I might be tasting? Has anyo
